It all began with training, preparation and competition. Years spent working with dogs taught me that good results are never accidental: they come from knowledge, patience, consistency and a considerable amount of muddy footwear. Then came the training field, where working every day with dogs and their owners allowed me to discover how differently each breed observes the world, learns and negotiates with the human species.

But dogs are not made only for training fields and competitions. Some of the most valuable lessons begin when we leave familiar paths behind and explore the world together. Trying to understand their character—and the strange, beautiful relationship we share with them—eventually led me to write about breeds, behaviour, training and everyday life.

From there, the journey became slightly more interplanetary. After all, living alongside another species, attempting to understand what it thinks while it tries to make sense of us, is already a respectable form of science fiction. Along the way, these experiences became books, articles, radio programmes, interviews and television appearances. Apparently, if you spend long enough observing dogs and humans on the same planet, sooner or later someone invites you into a studio and asks what you have discovered.
